SUSAN HUTSON

AGED WOMAN FOUND DEAD IN YARD AT HOME NEAR LANTON - Small dog kept vigil over body of Mrs. Susan Hutson - Believed to have been dead two or three days. No foul play.   Mrs. Susan Hutson, 84 years old, widow of the late Albert Hutson, pioneer resident of the Lanton community, was found dead in the yard at her home just across the line in Arkansas, one and one half miles from Lanton, in this county, a few mornings ago, according to word brought here today. An Arkansas coroner's jury found that the woman came to her death from natural causes. It is believed that the woman had fallen with a heart attack and that she had been dead for two or three days, as her cows apparently had not been milked for a few days and the condition of the body also indicated that death had occurred a few days before the finding of the body.

~ Dog Keeping Vigil ~

When a neighbor, Mrs. Fanny Cates, went to the aged woman's home on an errand, she found the body in the yard, where a small dog, which had been Mrs. Hutson's constant companion, apparently had been keeping vigil. When Mrs. Cates arrived on the scene the little dog was fighting with a hog which had come into the yard and was trying to get to the body. Mrs. Hutson, although advanced in years, had declined to live with any of her sons and daughters, independently maintaining her own home and living alone. She was alert mentally and physically and kept a cow and a few pigs and chickens which she looked after herself. The coroner found more than $200 in a secret pocket in the dress the woman was wearing when her body was found. Surviving the aged woman are three sons, Albert Hutson of Lanton, Tom Hutson of Moko, AR, Alec Hutson of Union AR, and three daughters, Mrs. Lily Goner and Mrs. Cora Ryan of Gillespie IL, and Mrs. Jones of Springfield MO, all of whom were present for the funeral which was held at Lanton. ~ West Plains Weekly Quill Oct 17 1935. ~ West Plains Weekly Quill Oct 24 1935.  NOTE: MO Death Cert.#6823 for Albert Hutson of Lanton MO, (Oct. 7, 1885 - Mar. 1, 1940) states he was the son of John Hutson of Tennessee and Susan Hubanks of Tennessee. The informant was J. T. Hutson of Moko AR. Burial was at State Line, Mar. 3, 1940. No death certificate was found for Susan Hutson.
