Howell County was organized in 1857, the territory being taken from
Oregon and Ozark Counties. During the war the people were subjected to the
tyranny of both armies, and practically robbed of its people and wealth,
not more than fifty families remaining. Pine, oak and hickory abound, the
valleys show a very rich soil and the uplands a sandy loam, when not covered
with conglomerate rocks and flint. Iron and lead ores exist in commercial
quantities. In 1838 a pioneer settlement was made near West Plains, and the
development of the soil was begun. Since that time the country has become
a cotton and tobacco producer, but the cultivation of the staple grains is
attended to and great crops of corn, wheat and oats are raised. The county
was credited with 18,618 inhabitants in 1890, of whom there were 1,865 in Ben-
ton Township, 664 in Chapel, 1,482 in Day Creek, 1,120 in Goldsberry (includ-
ing Mountain View Village), 3,906 in Howell (including 2,091 in West Plains
Sityy 1,176 in Hutton Valley, 882 in Myatt, 1466 in Sisson, 1,141 in South Fork,
2,129 in Spring Creek, 2,787 in Willow Springs (including 813 in the first and
722 in the second ward of Willow Springs City, or 1,535 urban). The postal
towns are Amy, Bly, Brandsville, Burnham, Chapin, China, Christy, Cobalt,
