Nova Lucille Bailey Memorial Services will be held Saturday, July 5, 2008 at 11:00 AM at Bradford Funeral Home in Summersville with Rev. Harold Smith officiating. Nova 'Lucille' Bailey was born November 6, 1921 to John H. Bailey and Emily 'Anna' Ward Bailey. She died June 23, 2008 at Kabul Nursing Home, Cabool, Missouri, making her age 86 years. When she was a child she suffered a head injury and on another occasion a high fever; she was diagnosed as mentally challenged. She lived at home with her parents, then only with her mother into her adult years, until her mother could no longer care for her. Then her sister, Hazel and family, provided a home for her. Upon Hazel’s death, her sister, Ethel, then cared for Lucille until Ethel became ill. Lucille became a resident of the Kabul Nursing Home where she received the same care her family had given her. Even as a 'special' child, she could amaze every one the way she could play the piano by ear. One could play a song, and afterwards she could sit down and play that song. Special training provided now was not available then, so she did not learn to verbalize her speech, but she used certain key words, and a lot of signs and motions. One of the people she talked about a lot was 'Gay', her niece. Emily Gay Durnell, of Cabool, oversaw her care at the nursing home, visited her regularly, and would pick her up and take her home for special occasions. She is preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Cecil, Roy, Marvin, and one infant brother; six sisters, Ethel Spencer, Elsie Bingham, Alice Tow, Hazel Trevena, Ina Hammon, Ruby Bailey; five brothers-in-law, and one sister-in-law. She is survived by one sister-in-law, Edith Bailey, of Denver Colorado; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. The family wishes to thank the Staff of Kabul Nursing Home for their loving and understanding care of Lucille, and to any friends she made during her residence. She loved to watch and be with people.

Eva Jo Bradford Brown

Born March 25, 1935, Eva Jo grew up in Birch Tree MO, and decided at an early age to become a nurse. Her father was doubtful and in the summer of 1952, arranged for her to work in the Cancer Hospital in Columbia MO For most teen-agers, a Missouri summer at the Cancer Hospital would not be viewed as a pleasant experience, but she completed the summer as certain as ever that nursing was her calling.

Eva passed away April 15, 2008, at Phelps County Regional Medical Center in Rolla MO Death was from respiratory complications from myasthenia gravis, a chronic illness that she had lived with for more than 30 years. Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Brown, and both parents, Walter and Nettie Mae Bradford. She is survived by her sons, Brad Seawell of Cambridge, Ma., Lee Seawell of Syracuse, N.Y., and Gustin Seawell of St Louis MO; step-daughter Leslie Gephart of Berlin, Md.; her brother and sister-in-law, David and Ersel Bradford of Bolingbrook, Ill., and two nieces and three great-nieces. In addition, she left many friends, who knew her as Eva, and relatives, who still knew her as Eva Jo.

Eva was a graduate of the nursing program at the University of Missouri and kept in close touch with her classmates following her graduation in 1957. As recently as 2005, she got her classmates together to purchase a seat with an inscription in the now newly remodeled Ann Crowe Essig Nursing Auditorium at Mizzou in the MU Sinclair School of Nursing. She helped contribute to the remodeling and the progress of her alma mater. In 2007, she and classmates were together to celebrate their 50th class reunion.

She was a retired nurse, having most recently worked at Sandstone ResCare in Rolla, and at the Mid Missouri Mental Health Center in Columbia MO Before that, she had been active as a working nurse and volunteer. Eva had been active in training personnel to meet state requirements and qualifications. She was a contributor and participant in many organizations, with special interest in health issues, animal rights, the environment, women’s rights and politics.

She was also a charter member of the recently formed Rolla Chapter of ARMSE, was a member of Jeffersonian Women’s Democratic Club, and participated in the 2004 Voice For Choice women’s march on Washington, D.C.

In 1957, she married Thomas Seawell, and to this union were born three sons. The family spent time in Missouri, Texas, and Arkansas before settling in Oswego, N.Y. Mr. Seawell, who is a retired college professor and an artist of note, survives Eva Jo. After an amicable divorce in 1983, she left Oswego and returned to Columbia MO She spent her final years in Rolla, after meeting and marrying Harry Brown, a physics professor at the University of Missouri-Rolla.

It was Eva’s wish to be cremated, and as such, there will be no services held at this time. A memorial service will be held June 21, 2008, 1 p.m., at the James & Gahr Mortuary in Rolla. In lieu of flowers, memorial tributes are requested.

In appreciation of her nursing profession, education, her classmates, and the nurses who have touched her life, the family has selected the Clinical Simulation Learning Center Skills Lab of the MU Sinclair School of Nursing as the most appropriate fund. Virtually every student nurse is touched by the learning opportunities this room offers, and thus it seems the most fitting tribute to Eva Jo. Please make checks payable to: MU Sinclair School of Nursing, and include a name/address so family may express their thanks. Also please designate on the subject line of your check that your gift is “In memory of Eva Bradford.” Memorials may be sent to the following address at the University and they will ensure Eva’s family knows of all gifts received in memory of her: MU Sinclair School of Nursing, University of Missouri, S-219 School of Nursing Office of Development, Columbia, MO, 65211. If you have questions, please call 573-884-0421. Eva Jo will be remembered by her family, friends, classmates, and the legions of lives she touched in her years as a dedicated nurse.
