Docie Gunter Sams | Age 80, West Plains MO - Funeral services were held Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mrs. Sams died 4:28 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at Ozarks Medical Center. She was born June 3, 1928, in Cureall, Mo., to Willis Charnel and Wilda Jane Croney Gunter. On Sept. 30, 1954, she was married in Howell County, Mo., to Thomas Charles “Tom” Sams who preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1988. She loved gardening and the outdoors; also, she enjoyed spending time with her family and especially loved to cook for them. Mrs. Sams was a member of the Dripping Springs Church of God for 25 years. She is survived by two children, Charlie Sams and wife, Sherri, West Plains, and Wonda Marcum and husband, John, Pomona, Mo.; four grandchildren, Scott Martin and significant other, Cheyenne Bales, Shawna Gonzales, Evan Chaffin and wife, Felicity, and Ashley Sams; one step-grandchild, Michael Marcum; six great-grandchildren, Mariana, Nathan, Caleb, Memphis, Kirsten and Vincent; one step-great-grandchild, Damon; two brothers-in-law, Floyd Sams and wife, Eva, of West Plains, and Leonard Courntey of Crider, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, three brothers and one infant sister precede her in death. Burial was at Howell Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Ball Cemetery and left at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. |
Berley W. Sanders Sr. | Willow Springs MO - Passed away at his home on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008, at the age of 60. He was born in Urainia, La. on Aug. 13, 1948, to the late Berley and Clemmie (Miles) Sanders. On June 6, 1970 he married Ethel Barnett, who survives. Berley recently retired from United Parcel Service where he worked as an over-the-road truck driver. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and was a licensed pilot and loved to fly. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where he was involved in missionary work, and he loved spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed by his surviving family which includes his wife Ethel, of the home; two sons, Berley W. Sanders Jr and wife Debbie, and Richard G. Sanders, of Willow Springs; three daughters, Sarene N. Sanders, Shavonne V. Ousley and husband James, and Rebecca L. Sanders, all of Willow Springs; one brother, J. Ronnie Sanders, of Alexandria, La.; two sisters, Donna Randall, of Olla, La., and Sheila Winget, also of Alexandria, La.; 12 grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Funeral services for Berley Sanders Sr. will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, 2008, at the Roll913 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Interment will be in the Hawthorne Cemetery in Little Creek, La. A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 14, 2008, at the Null & Son Funeral Home in Rolla. Frances Marie Sanders | passed away on July 3, 2013 at the age of 100 years. She was born May 22nd, 1913 in Columbia, Missouri to John Sullivan Sanders and Anna Rachel (Pickering) Sanders, and in 1916, at the age of 3, she moved with her parents to Pomona, Missouri where she resided until 1978. She lived in House Springs, Missouri from 1978 to 1985 when she moved to Oregon City, OR. She is survived by a daughter, Glenna Hogan (Sanders) Davolt & son-in-law Dr. William Davolt, three grandchildren, Holly Clinton, Ami Campbell (Russell) and Adam Davolt (Joy). Six great grandchildren, Kiya, Evan & Jeremy Davolt and Jasper, Aelish and Violet Campbell. She was a gentle, loving soul who loved children, animals, flowers and nature walks. She was a long-time member of the Pomona Christian Church and in recent years faithfully attended the Oregon City Methodist Church, where services were held on July 7. She is interred in Canby, Oregon. |
GILBERT 'ROY' SANDERS | Born May 13, 1940 in Winona, Missouri to James Luther Sanders and Ruby Bertha (Hicks) Sanders. Roy passed away May 8, 2006 at Mountain View, Missouri at the age of 65 years. He was united in marriage to Sharon Yvonne Welsh on April 7, 1984 at the Assembly of God Church in Winona, Missouri. Roy is preceded in death by his parents James Luther and Ruby Bertha Sanders; one brother Martin Luther Sanders and one grandson Michael Gilbert (Mikee) Sanders. Roy is survived by his wife Sharon Sanders of Mountain View, Missouri; three sons Michael Roy Sanders and wife Jennifer of Winona, Missouri; Markel James Sanders and wife Beverly of Winona, Missouri and Ricky Dale Sanders of Winona, Missouri; two step children Ronald Lawson of Mountain View, Missouri and LaShawna Bush and husband Monty of Mountain View, Missouri; four grandchildren Ricky, Crystal, Casen and Salena; three step grandchildren Trenton, Brenton and Peyton; three great grandchildren Jordan, Jayden and Treyton; on brother Lindell Sanders of Winona, Missouri; four sisters Dawna Mae Phillips of Mountain View, Missouri; Rosemary Vermillion of Eminence, Missouri; Kathlene Purcell of Salem, Missouri and Sandra Phillips of Winona, Missouri. Roy grew up in the Winona area and graduated from Winona High School. He served from 1958 to 1964 as a mechanic in the United States Army. Roy attended the Christian Church in Mountain View, Missouri. He loved his family and friends and will truly be missed by all. You smiling face will be forever in our hearts. Norma Jean Kinder Sargent | Age 79, West Plains - Funeral services were held Friday, Jan. 4, 2008, at the First Baptist Church under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mrs. Sargent passed away in her home surrounded by her loving husband and daughters on Jan. 2, 2008, after an extended illness. Jean was born in Rolla, Mo., on Dec. 6, 1928, to Roy Lee and Susan Bertha Harris Kinder, who preceded her in death. Jean graduated from Annutt High School in 1946. She married Robert L. Sargent on June 3, 1947, in Harrison, Ark. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this past year. In 1959, Bob and Jean moved their family to West Plains to begin their own business, Ozark Asphalt Company. She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the Ideal Sunday School Class. She was active in the Rambling Rose Garden Club, where she made many lifelong friends. During the mid 1970s, Jean found a new passion, golf. She and Bob enjoyed many competitive rounds of golf weekly with friends. She loved collecting antiques and shopping, as well as gardening. Jean is survived by her husband, Robert L. Sargent, of the family home; three daughters, Saundra Roe and husband, Tom, of West Plains, Mo., Shirlee Francis and husband, Joe, of Jacksonville Ark., and Sharon Hamlet and husband, Rick, of Stockton, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Keith Roe, Chris Roe and wife, Sissy, Tricia Thomas and husband, Chuck, Kelly Roe, Robert Francis, Jessica Hamlet and Justin Hamlet; eight great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Katelyn, Kassidy, Nakaya, Nacona, Chase, Hannah and Claire; two brothers, LeRoy Kinder and wife, Barbara, of Lenox, Mo., and Lynn Kinder and wife, Kay, of Licking, Mo.; one aunt, Lillie Kinder; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. BERTHA ANTIONETTE MASHBURN SCARBROUGH | Of Willow Springs, died at Mountain View (MO). She was born on Feb. 14, 1918 at Hazel Grove, Ark. Was the daughter of the late A. B. Mashburn and Louie L. Justus. Survived by her husband, A. T. 'Pete' Scarbrough; daughters, Mary Louise Ramsey, Martha Ann Scarbrough, mother, Louie Mashburn, Williford, Ark.; sisters, Mrs. Mary Bottom, and Mrs. Louise Garside,; and brothers, Charles and Bertrum Mashburn. Maxine Empo May Schneider | Age 41, was the daughter of George Ira May and Cora Elizabeth Mustion. Married Frank J. Schneider on April 3, 1942 in West Plains, Howell County, Missouri.Maxine was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.Maxine first became ill in 1955 and again in 1958 while in New Oreleans, Louisana. When her fever came down she was brought back to West Plains. She and her husband had moved to Dexter, Missouri in April 1954 where he operated a shoe store. She left her husband Frank and 3 children, Linda, James Lynn, and Steven Lee. |
Bryan Keith Schulz | Bryan Keith Schulz of Mountain View, Mo., passed away at his home on Dec. 8, 2009. Bryan was born April 19, 1970, to Carolyn Ann (Ellett) and Earl “Ed” Schulz, in Mountain View, Mo. Bryan worked in the construction field most of his life after graduation from Liberty High School in Mountain View. Bryan was married to Donna Edwards in September of 1993 in Washington, Iowa, and to this union a daughter, Brittney Jewel, was born. He was later married to Lorrie Ledgerwood in March of 2003 and to this union, Bryann Nicole was born. Bryan was married to Trina Colter of Mountain View on June 20, 2009. Bryan loved spending time in the outdoors – hunting, skiing or any water sport and riding horses. He also loved spending time with his daughter Bryann. One of his favorite things to do was hunting for mushrooms. Bryan had accepted Christ as his personal Savior. Preceding him in death was his grandmother, Bessie Ellett and grandfathers, Casey Ellett and George Schulz. He leaves to mourn his wife, Trina, and her children, Caitlin and Isaac, of the home; daughters, Brittney and Bryann; mother and stepfather, Carolyn and Daryl Young of Mountain Home Ark.; father, Ed Schulz of Mountain View; grandmother, Cleffie Schulz of Mountain View; siblings, Tammy and Casey Self of Western Grove, Ark., Leman Schulz of Overland Park, Kan., Cindy and Christopher Somers of Houston, Texas, Crystal and Calvin Hopper of Mountain View, and Russell Young of West Plains, Mo.; and a large number of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. IDA E. WOODWARD SEAMAN | Mountain View – Funeral services for Mrs. Ida E. Seaman, 91, of Mountain View, who died at 4:30 p.m. Sunday in St. Francis Hospital where she had been a patient three and a half years, will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Eminence Methodist Church. The Rev. Norman Turnbough will officiate and burial will be in Munsell Chapel Cemetery at Eminence. Duncan is in charge. Mrs. Seaman retired from a teaching career more than 50 years ago. She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Survivors include a daughter, Juanita (Mrs. Viandell A. 'Spider' Smith), Mountain View; four sons, Carlton Edwin 'Carl' (m. Spring AR - Born Sept. 22, 1942, in Sikeston MO, and passed away Sept.
8, 2008, at his home. Survivors include one daughter, Rose Zetta Waldrup and husband, Tom, Licking
MO; two sons, Dallas Selby and wife, Barbara, Willow Springs MO, and John
Selby and companion, Amy Vaughn, West Plains MO; his mother, Zetta Selby; two
sisters, Alice Selby and Penny Austin; eight grandchildren; several nieces and
nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous other relatives and
friends. He was preceded in death by his companion, Neva Deboise; his father, Wilton
A. Selby. There will be a graveside memorial service 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008,
at the Ed Collins Cemetery in Wirth AR, with Bro. Ron Richardson officiating.

Earl David Sells | Born Jan. 25, 1932, at Wichita, Kan., the son of Earl Fate Sells and Letta Pearl (Berg) Sells. He passed away Oct. 4, 2008, in Wichita, Kan., at the age of 76 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl Fate and Letta Pearl Sells; and one brother. He is survived by three sons, David Michael Sells, Timothy Sells and Vaughn E. Sells, all of Wichita, Kan.; three daughters, Kathleen Buchholz of Sioux Falls, S.D., Letta Anne Phelps of Georgia, and Rose Pearl Sells of Wichita, Kan.; two brothers, Oliver Dean Sells of Seattle, Wash., and James H. Sells of Washington, Ind.; five sisters, Lillian Pearl Sells of Lincoln, Neb., Nancy Jane Fee of Marion, Kan., Mary Martha Spitzer of Wichita, Kan., Bettie Jean Welty of Wellington, Kan., and Sammie Lee Mostrom of Thief River, Minn.; nine grandchildren, and two great-grandsons. Earl was a former member of the First Baptist Church in Mountain View, Mo. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps on Sept. 19, 1951, serving during the Korean War and Vietnam. He retired from the U.S. Marines on Oct. 1, 1981, serving our country faithfully and honorably for 30 years. Earl was awarded the Korean Conduct Medal; National Defense Service Medal; the United Nations Service Medal; Good Conduct Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm & Frame; and the Vietnamese Campaign Medal. He was a member of the Mountain View VFW and the AMVETS. Interment with military honors will be scheduled at a later date. Local arrangements will be under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home of Mountain View. |
James Marvin Seward | Born Oct. 19, 1942, the son of John Henry Seward and Miriam Annette Opie Seward in Pekin IL. He departed this life on Nov. 7, 2008, in St. John’s Mercy Hospital in Washington MO, at the age of 66 years. James was of the Baptist faith and served in the ministry for several years. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include two sons, Martin J. Seward of Washington MO, and James Clifford Seward of Liberty MO, currently serving in the U.S. Army stationed at Fort Benning GA.; and one daughter, Melea Lisa Seward of Brooklyn NY. OPAL F. WOOD MCCRACKIN SHADWELL | Age 71, Aurora MO - Formerly of the Pomona area - Mrs. Shadwell died Wednesday at 11 a.m. at her home. She was born Feb. 26, 1905 at Pomona, the daughter of the late William and Kathryn Playforth Wood. She had spent her early life in this area and in 1922 she was married to Pearl McCrackin. On Dec. 20, 1935 she was married to Charles C. Shadwell. She has been a member of the Mount Zion Baptist Church for the past 40 years. Survivors include her husband, Charles Shadwell, three children, Max McCrackin, Warrensburg MO; Mary Pettigrew, Lincoln NE; Glen McCrackin, Kansas City MO; eight grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and a brother, Fred Wood, Yale OK. Preceding her in death are her parents, a son, seven brothers and three sisters. Funeral services were held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home of West Plains, with Rev. Fred Cunningham officiating. CAROLYN L. WHEATLEY SHANKS |
- A life long resident of Willow Springs, passed away unexpectedly of natural causes on Thursday, April 2, 2009, while at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains. Born on Aug. 22, 1951, in rural Howell County, Mo., to James Roy and Delores (Leininger) Wheatley, she was 57 years old. Mrs. Shanks was raised in the Willow Springs area where she has lived her entire life. Her family said that she was a warm and caring person who never met a stranger. She had many enjoyments in her life; however, her greatest joy and love came from her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by her family and all who knew her. Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents, one niece and one nephew. She is survived by her husband, Jerry Shanks of Willow Springs; her daughters, Heather Shanks of Willow Springs and Stacy Murdy of Cabool; and five grandchildren, Kacie, Kailey and Kyra Shanks, and Kyle and Dayton Murdy. She is further survived by her sisters, Sonja Brown and her husband Glenn, Elsa Conway and her husband Donald, and one brother, James Wheatley, all of Willow Springs. Funeral services were Monday, April 6, 2009, at the Bethel Community Church, located on Highway 76 in Willow Springs. Burial followed Monday’s service at the Dry Creek Cemetery in Willow Springs. Arrangements were under the direction of Willow Funeral Home. |
Douglas McArthur Shannon, Sr. |
- Son of Marvin Luther and Hallie Irene Witt Shannon, was born February 14, 1942 at Sturkie, Arkansas. After a wonderful life, he went on to be with our Lord June 28, 2008 at the age of 66. On September 19, 1959, he was married to Bertha Elliott at West Plains, Missouri. From this 43- year marriage, three children were blessed into their home: Sherri, Terri and Douglas Jr. For over 40 years he was a minister of the gospel, a builder by trade and enjoyed bluegrass music. Douglas played every stringed instrument, although he never mastered the fiddle. He was best known for picking his Gibson Mastertone banjo. He was a man with a BIG heart who enjoyed helping others. He was light-hearted, free spirited and had a way about him that often brought laughter. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marvin and Hallie; three brothers, Rand, Ray and John, and two sisters, Pearlie Mae Smith and Laura Ann Norman. He is survived by his two daughters, Sherri Lynn Cronk and Terri Wynn Beavers; and one son, Douglas McArthur Shannon Jr.; two son-in-laws, Mark Cronk of McRae, AR and Tim Beavers of Willow Springs, MO; one daughter-in-law, Rebeka Shannon of Mountain View, MO; seven grandsons, Bradley Grogan, Christopher Grogan and wife, Kimberly, Ethan Shannon, Dustin Shannon, John Cronk, Jared Cronk and Stephen Cronk and wife, Jamie; three great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Jessie Cronk and Emma Mae Grogan; one brother, James Shannon and wife, Ruth, of West Plains, Missouri; six sisters, Sybil Stanley, Kathleen Wheeler and John; Virginia Sue Bell and husband, Leroy, all of the Hutchison, Kansas; Bertha Elliott; and Linda Fox and husband, Riley, all of West Plains, MO; and a host of nieces and nephews. On June 28, 2008, God sent angels to carry him home. 'And it came to pass that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom:' Luke16:22. He will be missed by all who knew him. Services were held on Wednesday, July 2 at 10:00 AM at the Pentecostal Church of God in Mountain View, with Rev. M.Y. Bennett officiating. John Henry Shannon Sr. | Age 74, West Plains MO - Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 11, 2007. in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mr. Shannon died 12:55 p.m., Monday, Oct. 8, 2007, at his home. He was born July 7, 1933, in Sturkie, Ark. to Luther and Hallie Witt Shannon. On Sept. 14, 1957, he was married at Sturkie, Ark., to Anna Mae Johnston. Mr. Shannon was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army and had been employed by the city of West Plains and Southwest Truck Body. Hezekiah Sharp | Age 83, West Plains MO - Funeral services for Hezekiah Sharp will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2008, in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mr. Sharp died 2:28 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at his home. He was born Aug. 6, 1924, in Norma, Tenn., to Wilbert and Beth Anna Hatfield Sharp. On March 28, 1992, he was married to Mary Burnett Birdsong. Mr. Sharp was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II in the European Theatre of War. He liked to hunt and fish and also enjoyed bluegrass music. Mr. Sharp was of the Baptist faith. FERN ADAMS SHENAUT | Born October 5, 1915 to the late Hugh and Florence (Horner) Adams in Willow Springs, MO. In the mid 1960s, Fern retired as a Registered Nurse. She was also a county health nurse for Shannon and Oregon counties. She lived at the Battlefield Towers Apartments for 29 years and was well known by all the residents who lived there. Fern was especially known for her hats as she never went out with out her hat and gloves. She lived her last few days at Greene Have Nursing Facility where she left to join her Savior on Easter morning. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Allen Shenaut. Fern is survived by her cousin Cecelia (Faysie) Pulliam and husband Jerry of Birch Tree, MO and numerous friends. Leo Thomas Sheridan | Age 77, West Plains - Mass of Resurrection Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mr. Sheridan passed away 1:53 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 4, 2008, at his home in West Plains, surrounded by his family, following a long illness. He was born July 17, 1931 in Glasco, Kan., the youngest son of Thomas and Emma Sheridan. He was married to Dixie Brewer on Nov. 21, 1959, in Kansas City, Mo. Leo graduated from Concordia Catholic High School, Concordia, Kan., in 1949. He then served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, and upon returning home attended the University of Missouri at Kansas City on the GI Bill. He earned a BS in Business Administration/Accounting followed by graduate work in Economics. He began a career as a revenue agent with the Internal Revenue Service in Kansas City, Mo., in 1960 and retired as Assistant Chief of Audit in Jacksonville, Fla., in 1981. Following retirement, he established his accounting practice in West Plains in 1982 and worked until his death. He is survived by his wife, Dixie Sheridan, of the family home; five children, Denise Ogilvie ( Scott), Overland Park, Kan., Diane Pannell (Steve), Las Vegas, Nev., Kelly Kollie (Tom), Vienna, Va., Colette Doyle (Jeff), Jacksonville, Fla., and Thomas Sheridan (Kristi), West Plains; nine grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and five sisters. Carl Dwight Sherrill | Born January 26, 1931 in Muskegon, Michigan to Henry Lawrence and Emma Elmira (Eastwood) Sherrill. He died February 1, 2008 at Ozarks Medical Center, West Plains, Missouri at the age of 77. Carl grew up in Eminence, Missouri and graduated from Eminence High School. He served his country in the United States Army for two years. He married Charline Head on May 24, 1959 in Thomasville, Missouri. To this union three children were born, Raymond Dwight, Edwin Lawrence, and Cherylene Dene'. Carl was an agent for Farmers Insurance Group for 36 years. Over the years, he had sponsored and coached numerous amateur sports teams. He was an honest man, who enjoyed and was successful in investments. He is preceded in death by his parents; one brother, William Lawrence Sherrill; one infant sister; one son, Raymond Dwight Sherrill; and one aunt, Mary Lou Eschrich. Survivors include his wife, Charline, of the home in Pomona, Missouri; one son, Edwin Lawrence Sherrill of St. Louis, Missouri; one daughter, Cherylene Dene' Hough and husband, Michael, of Peru, Indiana; one brother, Julian Forest Sherrill and wife, Thelma, of Pomona, Missouri; three grandchildren, Amy Jo Gallagher and husband, Shawn, Samantha Sherrill, and Kaitlin Guianan; and two great grandchildren, Savannah Jo Gallagher and Connor James Gallagher. LOU ELLA BRADFORD SHERRILL | Died Monday morning September 24, 2007 at the Kabul Nursing Home in Cabool, MO. She was born August 15, 1921 at Clear Springs, Texas County, MO. She was the daughter of George Thomas Bradford and Maudie Belle Combs Bradford. She received her elementary education at Clear Springs and graduated from the Willow Springs High School in 1942. She was married to James Arthur Sherrill, September 2, 1944 at Salem, AR. She worked at the Boeing Air Craft in Wichita, KS & also worked 24 years at Rawlings Mfg., in Willow Springs, MO. She was a Charter member of the Willow Springs Church of Christ, where she taught the beginning Sunday School class for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, Arthur, an infant son, her parents, one infant sister and a brother, Gene Bradford. Survivors include her daughters, Barbara Ann Pigg and (Richard, Sr.) and Jacqueline Kay Holmes and (Ralph) all of Jackson, TN; five grandchildren, Angela Doi and (Derwin) of Honolulu, HI; Richard E. Pigg Jr. of McDonough, GA; Robert M. Pigg and (Heather) of Conroe, TX; Ryan J. Reverend Larry Dale Shipley | Age 68, West Plains - Funeral services were Sunday, Feb. 1, 2009, at the First Congregational Methodist Church, West Plains, under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Rev. Shipley died at 1:16 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 27,2009, at Ozarks Medical Center. He was born Feb. 1, 1940, near Gainesville, Mo., to Theodore Roosevelt and Mildred Ada Phillips Shipley. On April 22, 1960, he was married at the Bond Ridge Assembly of God Church to Beulah Fern Moss. Rev. Shipley had worked for the West Plains Coca-Cola Bottling Company for about 30 years and was a ordained minister, having pastored the First Congregational Methodist Church, Smith Chapel Church and the Davis Creek Congregational Methodist Church. He was a songwriter, having written hundreds of songs and poems and had several songs recorded. Rev. Shipley was a talented musician, having played with several bands including the Ozarks Ramblers in the 1950s, with his father, the Shipley family and the Southern Grass. He had a regular show on KSHE, Unity Broadcasting Network on Monday evening. He is survived by his wife, Beulah Shipley, of the family home; three children, Ted Ray Shipley, wife, Teresa, Marsha Lynn Olmsted and Scotty Dale Shipley, all of West Plains; five grandchildren, Nicholas Joseph Shipley, Lauren Lannette Shipley, Audriaunna Elizabeth Olmsted-Coursen, husband, Andrew Paul, Shauni Analycia Olmsted and Emilee Kaitlin Barker; his mother, Mildred Shipley, West Plains; two brothers, Jim Shipley, wife, Polly and Tom Shipley, wife, Phyllis; one sister, Deloris Barlow, husband, Ron; two sisters-in-law, Betty Walker, husband, Gene and Faye Judd, husband, Bill; several nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Roberta Lynne Drago Silva | Age 57, West Plains - Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2008, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mrs. Silva died 6:17 a.m. today, Friday, Nov. 21, 2008, at her home. She was born Sept. 21, 1951, at Springfield MO the daughter of Vivian Mae Hudson Drago and the late Robert Tillman Drago. She was a 1969 graduate of West Plains High School, and in 1976 graduated from the St. Louis College of Pharmacy. In 1980, she was married at West Plains to Delbert Charles Hubbard, who precedes her in death. On Nov. 29, 2003, she was married to Stanley M. Silva. Mrs. Silva was a pharmacist, and for the last eight years, was a Clinical Pharmacist at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home AR. Prior to her current employment, she owned her own pharmacy, and had done relief work for many pharmacies around the area, as well as being a hospital pharmacist at Ozarks Medical Center. She had been a pharmacy manager for a medical building pharmacy in Springfield MO. She had also taught pharmacology in the West Plains Nursing School program at Southwest MO State University. She had been a member and past officeholder of the Missouri Pharmaceutical Association. She was elected and served two terms on the West Plains City Council, had been an assistant soccer coach with the Youth Soccer Association, and a den mother with her church’s Cub Scout pack. Lynne was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in several callings in the church, including chorister and pianist, and was one of the teachers in the Women’s Sunday School Class. Lynne had a true love of motorcycling that spanned 35 years and rode her own Harley for many years. For several years, she was a Motorcycle Safety Foundation instructor. Lynne especially enjoyed riding with her husband, Stan, and they traveled many of the scenic roads of Missouri and Arkansas. During her riding, she was actively involved in raising funds for the Susan G. Koman Foundation for Breast Cancer. Lynne enjoyed many hobbies, including reading, cooking, stained-glass, embroidery, photography, and had motorcycled to all but five of the 50 states. In the last years, she discovered quilting and enjoyed making quilts for family members, and baby quilts for friends and several charities. Lynne and her two sisters made a special trip together to a quilting retreat several months before her death. She is survived by her husband, Stanley M. Silva, of the family home; her son, Dustin Chet Hubbard and wife, Rachel; two stepchildren, Daniel Silva and Marilynn Silva; her mother, Vivian Drago; two sisters, Marjorie Doss and husband, John, and Helen Drago-Lucas and husband, Tim; her brother, Charles Drago and wife, Pam; her nieces and nephews, Jennie Doss, Vivian Lucas Kelley, Elizabeth Lucas, Samantha Lucas, Emily Gibson and Robert Drago; her great-niece, Catie Kelley; her brother-in-law, Reg Silva and wife, Debbie; and sister-in-law, Kathleen Koerte and husband, Dick. On Dec. 8, 1984, she was married at West Plains, Mo., to James Simpson. Mrs. Simpson was a commercial insurance agent. She liked to scrapbook, do photography, and loved to go to the lake. Mrs. Simpson loved her family and was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and friend. Mayne Vonallmen Sims | Age 81, West Plains - Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2006, in the Rose Chapel at Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mrs. Sims died 8:10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 6, 2006, in Brooke Haven Nursing Home. She was born April 14, 1925, in Rover, Mo., to Harlin Albert and Ethel Carrie Judd Vonallmen. She was married to Troy Griffith, who preceded her in death; she was later married to Granville Vandiver, who preceded her in death. For 30 years, Mrs. Sims was employed at International Shoe Company and before her retirement, she worked at Marathon. She was a member of the Assembly of God. Mrs. Sims was a loving mother and grandmother and her life was centered around her family. Melissa Diane Sloan | Age 39, Alton MO - She was born Nov. 27, 1969, at West Plains, Mo., to Dennis and Mildred Blair Sloan. Melissa died 6:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at her home. She graduated from the West Plains High School with the class of 1988 and attended one semester at Southwest Missouri State University. After graduation from high school, she was employed at Schwegman Office Supply and in 1993, she and her former husband, opened and operated J & M Discount. Melissa was later employed as office manger at Ramey’s and most recently, was a cashier at Casey’s. She is survived by her parents, Dennis and Millie Sloan, of West Plains; grandmother, Alma Sloan; uncle, Jay Sloan; aunt, May Ott, husband, J.W.; cousin, Monica Osborn and special friend, Jerry Fields and children, Jimmy, Don, Billy Joe and Meagan. ALBERT GLENN SMITH | Age 61 - Born April 12, 1920 at Creston IA. He went home to be with the Lord on January 4, 1982. He was born the son of Mr. Bert and Mrs. Hester Smith. Glenn attended some elementary school here in Mountain View, then moved with his family to Creston, Iowa where he graduated from high school and attended college. He was converted and baptized at an early age and moving back to Mountain View he united with the First Baptist Church on July 28, 1939. He entered the service of the United States Army in 1942 and received an honorable discharge in 1945. He then was employed by the United State Postal Service until ill health forced him to retire in 1975. He was united in marriage to Joan Patterson on May 30, 1958 at Mountain View MO. They had made their home here until the time of his death. He is survived by his loving wife, Joan, of the home; a daughter, Evelyn also of the home; two sons, Ormal Joe Smith of Reeds Spring MO and Bert Paul Smith of Springfield MO; three grandchildren, two nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. He is survived by an innumerable host of friends herein Mountain View, across this great state and throughout our nation. Glenn had always been a very interesting an d active member of his church. He was instrumental in organizing and sponsoring the first of the youth choirs and other organizations. He diligently worked as chairman of the landscaping committee who efforts attract a great number of tourists each year. In 1947 he led the church in purchasing an organ. Glenn and this organ have been together for the past years. His dedication to church music has been a blessing to thousands of people. Glenn Smith was a caring person. He and Joan took into their home one of the dearest 'saints' of the church, Mrs. Lucy McDowell, better known as 'Grandma Mac.' She lived with them until the time of her death. Glenn had a keen interest in community affairs. He was an ardent member of the (missing) Mountain View Federated Garden Club and his insight into the earth's beauty was used as an instrument to help beautify the city of Mountain View. Through his efforts and of others, national interest has focused upon this community. Bertha Smith | Oct. 14, 1907 - Dec. 17, 2006 - Born at Bexar Fulton Co AR, died at West Plains Howell Co MO - In 1923 she was married to Delbert Rowden, and to this union children were born, Pay Rowden Breckenridge, and Bob Rowden. Delbert Rowden preceded her in death in 1964. She lived most of her adult life in and around West Plains, MO, working at International Shoe factory for many years and then at Murrell's Cleaners, from which she retired in 1970. In 1972 she married Orlie Moss of Oxford, who preceded her in death in 1985. In 1990 she married R. V. Smith of Mountain Home, who preceded her in death in 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and one sister. She is survived by her two children, Pat Breckenridge of Paragould and Bob Rowden and wife, Eula, Eminence, MO; five grandchildren, Donna Pierson and husband Ray, Dick Crumbaugh and wife Nancy , of Jonesboro, Greg Rowden and wife Renee, of Eminence, MO, Kara Same and husband David of Muscle Shoals, AL, Carmen Kyle and husband John, of South Haven, MS; and 11 great-grandchildren, Rayanne Pierson, Erick & Sara Crumbaugh, James, Jason and Emily Rowden, Whitley Williams, Brent and Blake Sams and Peyton and Grant Kyle. She was an avid Christian all of her life and witnessed to everyone, especially her family. She loved to play the piano. As a young girl she played the piano for many Brush Arbor Revival Meetings in the Bexar area. She accepted Christ as her savior at an early age. She was baptized on May 20, 1968, at First Baptist Church, West Plains, where he membership remained until her death. |
ELSIE NEIL SMITH | Daughter of the late Edward and Nancy Mariott Christopher, was born near Olden MO, May 6, 1902. Entered into rest June 3, 1971 at the age of 69 years. In early woman hood Mrs. Smith was married to William Cole, who preceded her in death in 1941. In 1943 she was married to Elta C. Smith, who preceded her in death Sept. 4, 1948. Surviving Mrs. Smith is a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Moore, Springfield MO; one granddaughter and five brothers and sisters, who are Fassie Summers, Pomona MO, Faye Hachtel, El Monte CA, Lola Bennett, Salem OR, Fred Christopher and Charles Christopher, both of Independence MO. Preceding her in death are four brothers and sisters. Esther Irene Miller Smith | Wife of Raymond Smith. Married Apr. 4, 1938. - Born June 7, 1921, to Alonzo and Lilly Novotny Miller in Prague, Okla. She died on Dec. 28, 2007, in Springfield, Mo., at the age of 86 years. Irene married Raymond Owen Smith on April 4, 193,8 and they were blessed with three children, Owen, Shirley and Lon. Irene went to Columbia School and Mountain View High School. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Mountain View. Before retiring, Irene had worked several years at Farmers Exchange, Angelica Uniform and Clinton Pallet Company. She loved her family and grandchildren very much. Her church family and friends were also very special to her. Mrs. Smith died 10:58 a.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Ozarks Medical Center. She was born Nov. 7, 1949, in Peace Valley, Mo., to James Edmond and Mildred Pauline Brower Denton. On March 11, 1972, she was married at West Plains, Mo., to Roy Edward Smith, who preceded her in death on Oct. 29, 2004. She enjoyed caring for others, enjoyed her grandchildren, and all of the little neighborhoods kids she “adopted” over the years. Mrs. Smith was of the Pentecostal faith. She is survived by four children, Roy Allen Smith, Fairland, Okla., Keith Alan Denton, wife, Stacy, Kelly Lynn Smith and Kimberly Dawn Smith, all of West Plains; seven grandchildren and one on the way; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Darrell Denton, wife, Charlene, West Plains; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lorene Burris Smith | Age 89, West Plains MO - Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 18, 2006, at First Baptist Church in West Plains under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mrs. Smith died at 11:17 p.m. on Friday, July 14, 2006, at West Vue Nursing Home. She was born Sept. 29, 1916, at Brandsville, Mo., to Ira John and Mary Frances Denney Burris. She attended the Thomasville school and on Dec. 24, 1935, was married at West Plains, Mo., to Earl Eugene Smith, who preceded her in death on July 6, 1982. She had been very active in her church and always enjoyed attending church. Mrs. Smith loved visiting and being with people. She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the First Baptist Church for many years. PEGGY LEE MAUPIN SMITH | Age 68, West Plains, formerly of Willow Springs, died at 7 a.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, in Ozarks Medical Center, West Plains. Mrs. Smith was born July 14, 1935, at Centralia, Mo., the daughter of the late Silas Maupin and Della Louise Hollis Maupin. She received her education in the schools of Columbia, Mo., graduating from the Hickman High School and attended the University of Missouri. On Sept. 5, 1954, she was married at Columbia, Mo., to Dr. C. Franklin Smith. Mrs. Smith was a girl scout and cub scout leader, was a member of the Eastern Star and helped with the Rainbow Girls. She enjoyed needlework, crocheting and knitting. Camping was a favorite family tradition she enjoyed for many years. She is survived by her husband, Dr. C. Franklin Smith, of the family home; six children, Holly Louise Smith, Sedalia, Mo., Angela Marie Smith, West Plains, Mo., Rebecca Anne Dilks and husband Robert, St. Charles, Ill., Nancy Lee Lovan and husband Martin, Willow Springs, Mo., Lee Franklin Smith and wife Mary, Columbia, Mo., and Lance Douglas Smith and wife Sandy, Inverness, Scotland; 11 grandchildren, Nathan Smith, Oliver and Rachael Dilks, Emily, Austin and Jared Lovan, Richard and Thomas Smith, and Lauren, Lacey and Landon Smith; one sister, Bunny Gayle Anderson, Kansas City, Mo.; four brothers-in-law; and many nieces and nephews. Rebecca 'Becky' Louise Smith | Age 57, Blytheville AR - Died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008. She was born in West Plains, Mo., on Dec. 30, 1950, to Ruth Hollingshad Rickard and the late Willis Eugene Smith. She grew up in West Plains and graduated from West Plains High School where she participated on the swim team, pep club, the choir and played the clarinet in the marching band. She was very accomplished, and even as a young person she received a full array of badges while participating in the Girl Scouts. She attended Arkansas State University in Jonesboro where she studied art. She moved to Blytheville in 1977, where she worked for Borg Warner Automotive as an information systems manager for 17 years. After retiring from Borg Warner, she pursued her passion for painting. An accomplished artist, she was commissioned by many to do paintings, portraits and most recently hand-painted invitations and cards. She also did artwork for the Blytheville Chamber of Commerce, Blytheville Annual Chili Cook-off, and the Arkansas Federation of Democratic Women. She has worked for the past few years for the TRIO Program at Northeast Arkansas College. She was an active member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Blytheville for over 30 years and was a Senior Warden. She had an infectious laugh and a wonderful sense of humor. She loved entertaining, throwing many great parties. She was a great cook, putting together wonderful dishes at a moment’s notice. She also had a lifelong love of books of which she had an extensive collection. She enjoyed traveling in recent years to Arizona for visits with her son and his family. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and loyal friend to many. She was preceded in death by her father, Willis Eugene Smith; and her brother, Willis 'Willie' Eugene Smith, II. She is survived by her mother, Ruth Hollingshad Rickard, West Plains, Mo.; her son, Dr. Matthew W. Smith and his wife, Meredith, Tempe, Ariz.; her beloved grandsons, Jackson and Wyatt; and a host of extended family and friends. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28 at St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Blytheville, with the Reverend George Klee officiating. Rollin Mitchell Smith | 90, West Plains, MO - Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at First United Methodist Church under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mr. Smith died 8 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, in Brooke Haven Healthcare. He was born March 1, 1917, in Pomona, Mo., the son of the late Millard Mitchell and Bessie Ann Brown Smith. He graduated from West Plains High School in 1935, and then attended Draughn's Business School in Springfield, Mo. Rollin was united in marriage Aug. 27, 1936, to Sybil Flora Vernon. They were married for 71 years. Sybil remains at the family home. He protected our country during World War II, serving with a tour of duty in Italy, and he became a Christian during his military service. After returning home, Smith was a civil servant, working for the U.S. Postal Service for over 30 years. He enjoyed working both at the post office and as a rural carrier on Route 3 until his retirement in 1974. Rollin served on the board of the West Plains Savings and Loan for 47 years, as a board member, President and Chairman of the Board. His involvement with the Savings and Loan went beyond the board, as he expanded his duties to include appraising homes and farms throughout Howell and surrounding counties. As a co-owner of the Holiday Inn from 1965 to 1984, and the Ramada Inn from 1974 to 1991, Smith was an award-winning innkeeper having been recognized as Innkeeper of the Year in 1981. Alongside his son, Dr. Bruce Smith, Rollin built and established many cornerstones for the foundation of the West Plains business community. Along with motels and shopping centers in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Louisiana, one of his most cherished commercial developments was the Southern Hills Shopping Center in West Plains. Smith was a pioneer of economic and commercial development in West Plains, most recently receiving the honor of the 2008 Lifetime Achievement Award from the West Plains Chamber of Commerce. He also was awarded the West Plains Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Member Award. While serving on its board of directors from 1973 to 1974, one of his most treasured accomplishments was the addition of the second story to the West Plains Memorial Hospital. Along with his many civic contributions, Rollin was a loving father to his only son, Bruce Mitchell Smith, D.D.S., who preceded him in death in 2001. He also was a role model and loving grandfather to his grandsons and great-grandchildren. Rollin Smith is survived by his wife, Sybil Vernon Smith, of the family home; daughter-in-law, Allison London Smith; grandson, Travis Mitchell Smith and fiancee, Karen Carlson, and her son, Spencer Gille; along with Sandra Knudtson Smith, the mother of his great-grandchildren, Emily Anastasia, Evan Mitchell and Elijah Jackson Smith; grandson, Chase London Smith, his wife, Nicole, and daughter, Sydney London Smith, all of West Plains, Mo.; brothers, Dr. Kenneth Smith, Oklahoma City, Okla., Gerald Smith and wife, Helen, St. Louis, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews. Sarah Ann Sands Smith | Daughter of Lucy Beber and John C. Sands, born Jan. 1, 1847 in New York; died Mar. 28, 1918 at West Plains. Sister of Oscar, Alice, Chester, Lester and Mary; wife of Franklin A. Smith. Frank and Sarah adopted Theron P. Foster (b. 1890-SD [circa 1899, age 9]. Sarah Ann grew up in Chautauqua Co, NY. Sometime before 1867 the family moved to New Windsor, Mercer Co, IL, where Sarah met and married Franklin A. Smith b:1842-NY, a blacksmith by profession, the son of Harriet and Russell Smith. By 1880 Frank and Sarah were living in Harrison, near Judsonia, White Co, AR. By 1900, Frank and Sarah were living in West Plains, Howell Co, MO. I. S. and H. D. Hoffman, brought Theron P. Foster with them from Summit, Clay Co, IA to the Smith's to live with them. The Hoffman family helped raise Theron P. from abt. 1895-1898. Theron remained with his adoptive parents until after he turned 20. During their marriage, Sarah and Frank had two children, both passing away before 1910. |
Theodora Willa 'Theo' Smith | Age 94, West Plains - Graveside services were held Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008, at the Barnett Cemetery under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Theo died 2:25 a.m., Friday, Dec. 19, 2008, at Ozarks Medical Center. She was born Jan. 21, 1914, at Peace Valley, Mo., to Arthur and Mattie Heard Smith. She graduated from the Peace Valley High School and attended Draughan’s Business College, Springfield, Mo. Theo began her 45-year work career with the Government Extension Office in West Plains, was employed at National Bank, Howell County Recorder’s Office and worked at the West Plains Savings and Loan until her retirement at the age of 65. She had many interests, including playing the piano for the Methodist Church for many years and the South Tower group singings. Theo enjoyed many of the “oldies” music artists, loved to read and became quite a Bible scholar. She attended the meetings of the Trail Blazers at the New Hope Church at Peace Valley and was a member of the First Church of God, West Plains. She is survived by many friends including her special friends, Mary Robinson, Ken and LuElla Hunter and Jean Thompson. Her parents preceded her in death. He was the owner and operator of the Broadway Furniture Store and liked collecting antiques. George C. Sousley | George C. Sousley, a resident of Willow Springs, quietly passed away in the early morning hours Sunday, Dec. 13, 2009, while at Willow Care Nursing Home from natural causes. Born Oct. 14, 1911, to Oliver and Emma (Walls) Sousley in Camden County, Mo.; he was 98 years old. Mr. Sousley proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon his return, he lived in Kansas City, Mo., and went to work for H&S trucking in Eldon, Mo., and later Waller Truck Lines in Kansas City as a truck driver and dispatcher. Upon his retirement in 1983, George moved to Willow Springs. He was described as a good Christian man who was of the Pentecostal faith, and was a member of the Lighthouse Assembly of God. George liked to spend his leisure time working in his garden and yard, and fishing and hunting. However, he especially enjoyed being at the Willow Springs Senior Center where he could visit with his many friends. George will be greatly missed by his family and all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Rose Sousley and Lois Sousley; his son, Clayton L. Sousley; and six sisters and three brothers. He is survived by his daughter, Emma Fay Johnson and her husband Bill; his granddaughter Rene Johnson; and grandson Wayne Johnson and his wife Stacey and their two children Jordan and Cole, all of Willow Springs. He is further survived by his brothers, Donald Sousley and his wife Shirley of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; Norman Sousley and his wife Helen of Independence, Mo; and Audrey Sousley of Raytown, Mo. Riley Denver Spencer | Funeral services for Riley Denver Spencer, 73, West Plains, were Monday, April 13, 2009, in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mr. Spencer died at 5:30 a.m., Thursday, April 9, 2009, at his home. He was born Aug. 12, 1935, at Pottersville, Mo., to James Ernest and Alice M. Hall Spencer. On July 22, 1961, he was married at Van Buren, Mo., to Rosemary Ann Hall, who preceded him in death on March 3, 1994. Mr. Spencer was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army. Before his retirement, he was employed by Stewart Brothers Redi-Mix for 30 years. Mr. Spencer enjoyed traveling, woodworking and was a lifetime member of the Heart Of The Ozarks Bluegrass Association. He is survived by six children, Nancy Sullivan, state of North Carolina, Tina Sheperd, husband, Richard, of Tulsa, Okla., Helena Spencer of West Plains, Cynthia Howell, husband, Joe, of West Plains, Mo., Mici Long, husband, David, of Grand Junction, Colo., and Delbert Jones of West Plains; five grandchildren, Kevin Long, Mariah Miller Long, Abby Shephard, Lisa Sullivan and David Beachlor; two great-grandchildren, Wesley and Jacob; one sister, Naomi Pearson, husband, Raymond, of Bakersfield, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. Rosa Leah Story Spencer | Age 54, West Plains MO - Funeral services for will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2008, at Dora School, Dora, Mo., under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mrs. Spencer died 1:09 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2008, at Ozarks Medical Center. She was born March 27, 1954, in West Plains, Mo., to Hugh Adrin and Erma Kesler Story. She graduated from West Plains High School with the class of 1972, and received her education degree from Southwest Missouri State University. On June 3, 1972, she was married at Gospel Hill Church near Pottersville, Mo., to Bobby Spencer. Mrs. Spencer was employed by the Dora School System for 27 years, where she was the business teacher, A-Plus coordinator, was a past cheerleader sponsor and had been the senior class sponsor for 15 years. She enjoyed shopping, life and loved her grandchildren. Mrs. Spencer was a member of the Central Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, Bobby Spencer, of the family home; three children, Freddy Spencer, wife, Jessica, Columbia, Mo., Darla Evans, husband, Jason, Ash Flat, Ark., and Susan Howard, husband, Ronnie, Dora, Mo.; seven grandchildren, Emma Spencer, Kristin Evans, Morgan Murrill, Chase Evans, Madison Murrill, Spencer Howard and Cooper Howard; her mother, Erma Story-Williams, West Plains; one sister, Jan Dennis, husband, Randall, West Plains; and one nephew, Daniel Dennis, West Plains. Alice Mary Bates Spence | Born February 8, 1937 in Montier, Missouri, the daughter of Omar Daniel and Dora (Purl) Bates. She died April 3, 2008 in Mountain View Healthcare, Mountain View, Missouri at the age of 71. Alice graduated from Mountain View High School in 1955 and then attended cosmetology school in St. Louis, Missouri. She married Ralph Spence on December 21, 1955 in Columbia, Missouri, and to this union, three children were born, Robert, Tom and Judy. Alice was a homemaker and enjoyed caring for her family. She enjoyed crocheting and doing crossword puzzles. She is preceded in death by her parents, Omar and Dory Bates; three brothers, Charles, Chelmer and Carl; two sisters, Alveena Smith and Aleta West; her husband, Ralph Spence; and one grandson, Brett Gaghyan. Survivors include two sons, Robert Spence of West Plains, Missouri and Tom Spence and wife, Lila, of Mountain Grove, Missouri; one daughter, Judy Gaghyan and husband, Dave, of Mountain View, Missouri; two sisters, Alberta Rosenburg and husband, Ed, of Birch Tree, Missouri and Anita Weber of St. Louis, Missouri; one granddaughter, Katie Mounce; one grandson, Tom Spence, Jr.; and one great granddaughter, Bree Gaghyan. Mrs. Splettstosser died at 12:00 Noon, Thursday, June 7, 2012, at her home. She was born April 23, 1937, at Indianapolis, Indiana, to Harold Lawrence Buckley and Eudora Modena Parsons Buckley. The family moved to Texas while she was still young. Jean went to school in East Texas where she met and married James Splettstosser on January 29, 1955. They settled in Austin, Texas until retirement when they moved to Missouri. Jean was a member of the First Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband, James Splettstosser; one daughter, Pamela Splettstoesser, West Plains, Missouri; one son, Frederick Splettstosser, State of Texas; four grandchildren, Cheyenne Montoya, State of Colorado, Shane Bruner, State of Missouri, Chad Birch, State of Texas and Christan Jacoby, State of Texas; nine great-grandchildren and one sister, Margaret Gassenmayer, State of Texas. Glenn Edward Stafford, Sr. | Born February 1, 1949 to Von Hugh Stafford and Georgia Inez (Stickles) Stafford at Evening Shade, Arkansas. He passed away September 4, 2006 at Mountain View, MO at the age of 57 years. Glenn was united in marriage to Darla Frances (Hubbard) Stafford on February 7, 1970 at Cabool, Missouri and to this union three children were born. He is preceded in death by his father Von Hugh Stafford and one brother Von Dale Stafford. Glenn is survived by his mother Georgia Inez Stafford of Perry, OK; his wife Darla Frances Stafford of Mountain View, Missouri; one son Glenn Edward Stafford Jr. and wife Emma of Mountain View, Missouri ; two daughters Sandra Pilcher of Mountain View, Missouri and Glenda Lamborn and husband Les, Jr. of Mountain View, Missouri; three brothers Charles Stafford of Willow Springs, Missouri; Wayne Stafford of Carlsbad, New Mexico; Frank Stafford and wife Jenny of Odessa, Texas; two sisters Francis and her husband David of Perry, Oklahoma and Christine Hayes and husband Jack of Bernie, MO. Leonard Duane Staley | Age 83, Koshkonong MO - He was born the son of the late Roy Ernest Staley Sr. and Etta Ruth Linn Staley on April 17, 1925, in Koshkonong, Mo., and died Feb. 13, 2009, in Springfield, Mo. He was united in marriage Aug. 1, 1948, in West Plains, Mo., to Leota Irene Williams, who preceded him in death April 28, 2002. He is survived by three children, Gerald Staley and his significant other, Cindy Blankenship, of Steeleville, Mo., Rosemary Trobaugh and husband, Melvin, of Koshkonong, Mo., and Roy Ernest Staley and wife, Carolyn, of Koshkonong, Mo.; one special daughter-in-law, B. Carolyn of Steeleville, Mo.; one brother, Harvey Staley and wife, Mary Lou, of Muscatine, Iowa; one sister, Ruth Longnecker of Silvis, Ill.; eight grandchildren, Jake and Melissa Staley, Jody and Gabriel Trobaugh, Jerry Granger and wife, Becky, Jason, Brian, and Steven Staley; eight great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews and other relatives. CLARENCE STANLEY | Born June 10, 1907 in Ellijay, Georgia. He was the oldest son of Harley Stanley and Pearl Holden Stanley. He married Leila Texa Conley on August 3, 1924 in Blue Ridge, Georgia and they had six children, three daughters and three sons. They moved to Struthers, Ohio in 1929 where he worked as a foreman in the boiler and weld shop in the Campbell works of the former Youngstown Sheet and Tube Co. He retired in 1969 and they moved to Mt. View, Missouri. His wife Leila died in 1990 and he moved to Hubbard, Ohio with his youngest daughter Delores Wilt where he died of Leukemia on June 3, 1993 just seven days shy of his 86th birthday. Edna Virginia Dowell Stapleton | Born March 16, 1913, at Trask, Mo., the daughter of Joseph Flemming Dowell and Iva Haley (Rowlett) Dowell. She passed away June 21, 2008, at Via Christi-St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, Kan., at the age of 95 years. She was united in marriage to Cicero Henry Stapleton on April 9, 1930, at West Plains, Mo., and to this union four children were born. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Iva Dowell; her husband, Cicero; one daughter, Marion Freden; one grandson, Kenny Brotherton of Wichita, Kan.; three brothers, Pierce Dowell, Sanford Dowell and one infant brother; and three sisters, Hazel Cook, LaVerna Schottel and Jody Vickers. She is survived by her son, David Stapleton, and wife Kay of Pismo Beach, Calif.; two daughters, Evelyn Powell of Lenexa, Kan.; Elaine Cheek and husband Thurman of Wichita, Kan.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great grandchildren; one sister, Alice Cunningham of Mountain View, Mo.; and a host of other family and friends. Virginia attended the United Methodist Church in Mountain View, Mo., when she lived in the area. She had been residing at Lake Point Nursing Home in Wichita, Kan., for the last five years. Virginia was a seamstress and retired from Montgomery Ward after many years of employment. She was an accomplished artist, and painting was her passion. Della Mae Cooper Staudt | Age 71 - Springfield, Mo - Went home to be with the Lord and her family on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, in her home surrounded by family after a long battle with cancer. She was born on Oct. 19, 1931 in Mansfield, Mo. Della spent many years of her life in Mtn. Grove, Mo., helping raise her family. In 1975, she moved to Springfield to begin the second phase of her life. She went to work for Bernell Still, her lifelong friend, before obtaining her real estate license. This began a successful career that lasted the remaining years of her life. Della and her husband, Merrill, moved to West Plains in 1979 where they sold real estate for almost 30 years. She touched so many lives and helped so many people find homes to start their lives. Della attended the Presbyterian Church in West Plains. She served on numerous boards for Missouri State University-West Plains. She also supported many charitable causes in her community. The true joy of Della’s life was her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ralph and Chloe Cooper; her brothers, Clifford Cooper and Bill Cooper; and her dearest friend, her sister, Nonna Ruth Taylor. She is survived by her husband, Merrill Staudt; her children, Rusty Still and wife, Sara Still, of Springfield, and her daughter, Leslie Kilpatrick and husband, Tim, of Springfield; and the most precious blessing of her life, her grandchildren, Adam and Ashley Kilpatrick, and was so blessed to have had the chance to love her grandchildren’s future spouses, Stephanie Baldwin and Chris Evans; and many close friends. God graced her with two special people: John and Nancy Staudt, who helped both she and Merrill throughout their lives, especially in this difficult last year. at 11:05 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2007, in West Vue Nursing Center. She was born
April 8, 1908, in Anthony, Kan., to Archie Forest and Nancy Susannah White
Burns. On Feb. 8, 1928, she was married at Pottersville, Mo., to Raymond Jewell
Stephens, who preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1989. Before her retirement in
1965, Mrs. Stephens was employed at U.S. Rubber. She made 123 quilts and many
pillowcases which she gave as gifts to her grandchildren and
great-grandchildren. Mrs. Stephens was a member of the Spring Creek Church. She
is survived by four children, Dorothy Welch and husband, J.D., of Turnbull,
Neb., Juanita Welch and husband, Vernon, of Wheatland, Mo., Nancy Edberg and
husband, Wayne, of Hermitage, Mo., and Richard Stephens and wife, Rita, of West
Plains; 18 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren
and three great-great-grandchildren on the way; one sister, Margaret Johnson of
Riverside, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. Her parents; husband; grandson,
John Welch; two brothers, Homer and Cecil Burns; and three sisters, Maxine
Taylor, Katherine Mixon and Ruth Miller, precede her in death. Mrs. Stephens

VIRGINIA ROSE BERNARD STEMPER | Born October 7, 1923 at Des Moines, IA the daughter of Walter Von Bernard and Arvilla Pearl (Ross) Bernard and passed away August 25, 2007 at Mountain View, MO at the age of 83 years. Rose was united in marriage to Raymond Ervin Stemper on October 18, 1944 in Arkansas and to this union eight children were born. Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three daughters and one son. Rose is survived by one son Raymond E. "Sonny" Stemper and Elevada Teney of Brandsville, MO; three daughters Mary Ann Hoover and husband Norman of Peru, KS; Leona Ruth Thomas and husband Alfred of Wichita, KS and Rose Mary Lopez and husband Robert of Fontana, CA; five grandchildren Glenn, Don, Stephanie, Chris and Joey; fourteen great grandchildren Shae, Brevon, MaKenna, Elizabeth, Emily, Andrew, Saphire, Kayla, Mariah, Luke, Mark, Levi, Eden, and Drew; and numerous other family and friends. Rose was born in Iowa and lived there until her family relocated to the Mountain View area in 1936. She lived on a farm most of her life. She and her husband Raymond would work together on the farm raising crops and livestock. Rose would also help her husband in the timber woods. She was a hard worker and did her best to provide a loving home for her children she loved so dearly. Rose attended the Bible Way Home Mission Church in the Oakside Community and later attended Life Bible Church in Winona, MO when her health permitted. Rose will be sadly missed by all who loved and knew her. Charles Russell Stewart Jr. | Graveside services for Charles Russell Stewart Jr., 89, West Plains, were Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at the Howell Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mr. Stewart died at 9:43 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2009, at West Vue Nursing Center. He was born Aug. 24, 1920, in Tulsa, Okla., to Charles Russell Stewart Sr. and Katie Romie Conner Stewart. On June 15, 1941, he was married at Tulsa, Okla., to Ruth Taylor, who preceded him in death on Oct. 23, 2003. Mr. Stewart was a veteran, having served with the 45th Division, 160th Field Battalion of the U.S. Army during World War II. For years, he was in the construction business and at one time, owned a fishing dock on the White River. Mr. Stewart loved the outdoors, especially fishing; he spent many hours on the lakes and rivers. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, West Plains, Mo.; he loved his church family, especially the children. He is survived by one son, Charles R. Stewart III and wife, Judy, West Plains; one grandchild, Charlene McKee, husband, Craig, Caulfield, Mo.; two great-grandsons, Cody and Chad McKee; one brother, Kenneth Stewart, wife, Hazel, Owasso, Okla.; two sisters-in-law, Mildred Stewart, Flippin, Ark., and Blanche Stewart, Tulsa, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Stiner was employed at Brookview Apartments as a maintenance man for the last 20 years, having just recently retired. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and his grandchildren. Adamandia 'Menda' Stotis | Born August 17, 1925 at Lansing, MI, the daughter of James John Stotis and Sofia (Hondros) Stotis. She passed away June 23, 2008 at Kabul Nursing Home in Cabool, MO at the age of 82 years. She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by two special friends, Lovita Seibel of Willow Springs, MO and Sylvia Addie of Willow Springs, MO; her church family in Houston, MO; and her friends and staff at the Kabul Nursing Home. Menda worked as a waitress in various restaurants during her working life. She attended the Church of Christ (Temple Lot) in Houston, MO when her health allowed. Menda moved to the Mountain View area from Independence, MO in October, 1984 and lived in the area since that time. Funeral Services were held Thursday, June 26, 2008 at the Duncan Funeral Chapel in Mountain View with Elder David Keeney officiating. Interment was in Greenlawn Cemetery under the direction of Duncan Funeral Home of Mountain View. |

STOWERS FROM HERE YESTERDAY - (from Thursday's Daily Quill) - The funeral of Mrs. Rena Stowers, wife of S.H. Stowers, who died Monday at her farm home eight miles north of West Plains, was held at the McFarland Funeral Home on W. Main St., yesterday afternoon. Mrs. Stowers, who came here three years ago with her husband, had been in ill health for many years. Mr. Stowers is a bricklayer, and is known to many in West Plains, having worked on various building projects here. Barbara Strain | Funeral services for Barbara June Strain, 67, Caulfield, Mo., were held at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 14, 2009, in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mrs. Strain died at 11 a.m., Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at her home. She was born Sept. 27, 1942, at Blodgett, Mo., to Cecil Lowell and Ileta Margaret McCain Cannon. On Oct. 15, 1960, she was married at Lanton, Mo., to Charles Strain. Mrs. Strain had worked at Eaton Corporation and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was a member of the Free Union Church of Christ. Norma Faye Williams Stubbs | Age 76, of Willow Springs - Funeral services were held Sunday, Dec. 30, 2007, in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mrs. Stubbs died 11:01 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 27, 2007, in Willow Care Nursing Home, Willow Springs, Mo. She was born Oct. 24, 1931, in Pomona, Mo., to James H. and Syntha Willard Williams. She received her education in the schools of Willow Springs and on Jan. 24, 1953, was married to Bob Due who preceded her in death on Feb. 20, 1960. On April 6, 1962, she was married at West Plains, Mo., to Arthur Edwin (Junior) Stubbs who preceded her in death on June 25, 1985. Before her retirement, Mrs. Stubbs was employed at the International Shoe Company. She was a member and former secretary/treasurer of the Heart Of The Ozarks Bluegrass Association, had been an Ozarks Medical Center Volunteer and enjoyed doing crafts. Mrs. Stubbs was a member and worker in the Abundant Life Baptist Church. She was a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by three children, Ina Warren and husband Danny, of Dora, Mo., Steve Due and Robert Due of Liberty Hill, Texas; four grandchildren, Terry Warren, Curtis Warren, Gabrielle Due and Robert Due; two step-grandchildren, Megan Lowe and Chelse Lowe; two sisters, Vera Wickham and Ruby Hanks and husband Jr.; her special brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Manuel and Ruby Due and Jim and Karol Due; and several nieces and nephews. Her parents and husbands precede her in death. Burial was held at Howell Memorial Park Cemetery. Marcus 'Marc' Dale Sukow | A celebration of life was held at 7 p.m., Sept. 25, 2008, at the First Baptist Church South Campus, West Plains, Mo., under the direction of Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mr. Sukow died Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008, in St. Thomas. He was born Nov. 12, 1963, in West Plains, Mo., to Dale Edward and Jan Wheeler Sukow. Mr. Sukow was a graduate of Drury University in Springfield, Mo. He worked many years in the wastewater industry and currently was an environmental specialist at Viesco of St. Thomas. Marc loved fishing, water sports, hunting and being surrounded by his wonderful friends. He will be remembered for loving every moment of working at Viesco with his fellow employees whom he loved and adored as a family. He was always ready to extend a helping hand, outgoing, fun loving and never knowing a stranger. Joseph Allen Sullivan | Age 42, West Plains MO - He was born April 10, 1965, in Mountain View, Mo., the son of Leland and Rita (Patterson) Sullivan. He died Dec. 20, 2007, at 6:47 p.m. at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains. He was married to Joyce Banks and was owner and operator of ARM Enterprises sawmill. He was a former member of the Mountain View-Birch Tree school board and a member of Faith Assembly of God in West Plains. He is survived by his wife, Joyce, of the family home; daughter Fawna Vermillion of the home; two sons, Jason Allen Sullivan and Robert Trevor Sullivan of the family home; his parents, Leland and Rita Sullivan of Mountain View; four brothers, Jeff Sullivan and wife LaDonna of West Plains, Ray Sullivan and wife Darla of Willow Springs, Mark Sullivan and wife Rhonda of Mountain View, and Brendan Sullivan and wife Jackie of Arvada, Colo. He was preceded in death his grandparents. WILEY JACKSON SULLIVAN | Funeral services were held yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Robertson Funeral Home for Wiley Jackson Sullivan, 77, resident of Howell County for the last 15 years, who died Saturday in the Seven Gables Rest Home in West Plains. He was the father of Hazel Sullivan of West Plains, Mrs. S. R. Ballard of Rolla, who had been here for the last two weeks, and of Mrs. N. H. Zeller of St Louis, who arrived here Saturday. Rev. E. M. Wheatley conducted the services. Mrs. Lida Bozman sang 'The Lord's Prayer' and 'He'll Understand and Say Well Done.' Pallbearers were John Stein, Harvey Strong, Jim Porter, Clifford Carte, Roy Luna and James Bridges, Jr. Burial was in the Moody Cemetery. Mr. Sullivan was born in Sturgills, North Carolina Jan. 21, 1874, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Sullivan. He married Myrta Sturgills of that community in Bristol VA, forty years ago. She died here 12 years ago. - Formerly in Lumber Business - He was engaged in the lumber business at Sturgills for a number of years, later moving to Callaway Co MO where he continued in the lumber business. He retired 15 years ago and came to a farm near Moody MO to live. He moved to West Plains five years ago. He had been ill for the last two and one-half years. Besides his three daughters, he is survived by four grandchildren and by two brothers, Belix H. Sullivan of Stephens MO, who came here for the funeral, accompanied by his son Howard, and J. John David Sullivant | Age 66, West Plains MO - Funeral services were held Sunday, May 11, 2008, in the Rose Chapel, Robertson-Drago Funeral Home. Mr. Sullivant died 10:01 a.m., Thursday, May 8, 2008, in Baxter Regional Medical Center, Mountain Home, Ark. He was born Feb. 21, 1942, in Camp, Ark., to Dixie L. and Verbie Ella Sutherland Sullivant. He graduated from the West Plains High School with the class of 1959 and attended college receiving an accounting and engineering degree. On Dec. 4, 1976, he was married at Conyers, Ga., to Linda Diane Hembree. Mr. Sullivant was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy. He was of the Baptist faith with his membership in the First Baptist Church of West Plains. He is survived by his wife, Linda Hembree Sullivant, of the family home; his daughter, Amy Michelle Sullivant of West Plains; grandson, Caden Jonathan Bush of West Plains; one brother, Norval Lee Sullivant and wife, Bonnie, of West Plains; one sister-in-law, Jean Sullivant of St. Louis, Mo.; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. His parents; one infant son, David Lee Sullivant; and one brother, Noble Frank Sullivant, precede him in death. Allie Eugene “Gene” Swafford | born Oct. 24, 1927, in Braggadocia, Mo., the son of Arthur Walter and Vestal (Stanfil) Swafford. He departed this life on June 11, 2009, in NHC Healthcare, West Plains, Mo., at the age of 81. He is preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Gary and Terry Swafford; and 12 siblings. Survivors include his wife, Kay, of Mountain View; daughter, Debbie Kirbow of Temple, Texas; sons, Don (Sherri) Swafford of Springfield, Mo., and Ron (Mary) Swafford of Crystal City, Mo.; grandchildren, Cheri Mixon, Bing Swafford, Nappy Frank Swafford, Amanda Swafford, Matthew Swafford, Maggie Swafford and Margo Swafford; and great-grandchildren, Marcus Swafford, Javon Swafford and Emory Pollard. Gene served his country in the U.S. Navy. Following his military service, he was united in marriage to Catherine LaVange Frank in Piggott, Ark., on Nov. 19, 1950. Gene retired from construction work. He was a member of Full Gospel Church, American Legion and VFW. Even though Gene moved away, he always loved Mountain View and all his friends here. We will miss him. Funeral services were Saturday, June 13, 2009, in Yarber Chapel with Rev. Nolan Wilkins officiating. Mrs. Swanson died at 3:49 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2009, in St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Springfield, Mo. She was born Feb. 19, 1936, at Lexington, Neb., to Lindsey A. and Bertha A. Hartman Bethell. She graduated from Grants Pass High School, Grants Pass, Ore., with the class of 1954 and was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served from 1954 to 1956. On Nov. 6, 1960, she was married at Reno, Nev., to Drexel J. Swanson, who preceded her in death on Jan. 3, 1972. Before her retirement in 1995, she was a bookkeeper for Ozarko Oil Company of West Plains. Her children were her life and in addition to watching them grow into adulthood and have children of their own, she enjoyed reading and watching old movies. She is survived by four children, Phillip A. Swanson, wife, Becky, of Springfield, Mo., Frank L. Swanson of West Plains, Mo., Drexel J. Swanson II, wife, Esther, of Springfield, Mo., and Babbette M. She was born Jan. 27, 1947, in West Plains, Mo., to George and Wilma Ingalsbe Bandy. In 1978, she was married at West Plains, Mo., to David Swindle. Mary loved growing flowers, enjoyed talking and visiting with her friends and neighbors and loved her family. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of West Plains and was dedicated to attending church mass. She is survived by her parents, George and Wilma Bandy of West Plains; six brothers and sisters, Beverly Cole, husband, Ron, of West Plains, Jeanne McCormack, husband, Keith, of Frederick, Okla., Margaret Gobel, husband, Raymond, of West Plains, Brenda Stevens, husband, Leigh, of Austin, Texas, Linda Frazier of West Plains and G.
